The name of a people and their country, the modern Bengal.
It is nowhere mentioned in the four Nikāyas, nor included
among the Mahājanapadas.
The mother of Sīhabāhu and
Sīhasīvalī was a Vanga
princess, the daughter of the Vanga king who had married the daughter of the
king of Kalinga (Mhv.vi.1ff.; Dpv. ix.2).
The Milinda (p. 359) mentions Vanga as a trading place to
be reached by sea.
