The brahmins and householders of Veludvāra visit the
Buddha when he comes to their village and ask for a teaching which will be
profitable to them. The Buddha points out to them the advantages of keeping the
five precepts:
- abstention from taking life,
- from theft, etc.,
- avoidance of slander,
- harsh speech and
- frivolous talk,
- and of having faith in the Buddha, the Dhamma and the
Sangha. S. v.352f.
